The Greene County baseball team picked up one win and three losses in recent action. The Rams defeated Nevada, but lost to Collins-Maxwell-Baxter, Winterset and Gilbert.
Gilbert 8, GC 7
The Rams lost 8-7 at Gilbert June 3in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play, despite having more hits and fewer errors than the Tigers.
Coach Mark Sawhill’s team rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the seventh inning to tie the game, but the Tigers scored the winning run in the bottom of the frame for the victory. The loss drops Greene County to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Dylan Fouch threw 3-2/3 innings before handing the ball to Reid Lamoureux with the bases loaded. All three runs scored to give the Tigers a 3-2 advantage. The Rams responded with two runs in the fifth for a 4-3 lead, which held until Gilbert put four runs on the board in the sixth to go up 7-4. Branden Miller took the mound and struck out the only batter he faced in the sixth. Gilbert loaded the bases with one out in the seventh before getting a base hit up the middle for the victory.
The trio allowed eight runs on 11 hits. They netted four strikeouts and allowed nine bases on balls. Miller was saddled with the loss.
The Rams had 10 hits, all singles. Lamoureux and Miller each singled twice and drove in one run. Tyler Beger had four singles and Tom Gannon had one. Wade Adcock’s run scoring single in the seventh cut the lead to 7-6 and Ben Wilkins picked up his first varsity hit to tie the score at 7-7.
The Rams had two errors on the night and made several outstanding defensive plays.
Winterset 8, GC 2
Greene County fell to non-conference foe Winterset Thursday, June 2, in Jefferson. The Huskies won 8-2. Both teams are 1-3 on the season, scoring in all but the first and last inning with 13 hits. The Rams scored twice in the fourth and mustered five singles on the evening.
Wade Adcock, Tyler Beger, Lamoureux, Branden Miller, and Chase Stoline each stroked a single with Miller and Adcock driving in a run.
Sophomore Adcock was the losing pitcher. He went the first five innings and allowed seven runs, six of which were earned. Lamoureux allowed one earned run in two innings of relief. Together they gave up 11 hits with four walks and no strikeouts.
GC 5, Nevada 4
In their first road game of the season, the Greene County baseball team picked up their first victory, defeating Nevada 5-4 Wednesday, June 1.
Branden Miller was the winner in relief of starting pitcher Tyler Beger. Beger worked the mound through four innings, throwing four strikeouts and two walks while giving up four runs on five hits. Miller struck out one and gave up 11 hits, but a stellar defensive effort allowed no runs on those hits.
The winning run scored with one out in the top of the seventh and runners on first and third. Reid Lamoureux scored on a ground ball to third when the throw to the plate was too late.
The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout and soft liner behind second caught by shortstop Lamoureux ended the Cub threat.
The Rams had nine hits including the first extra-base hits this season, doubles by Lamoureux and Miller. Miller and Tom Gannon singled twice. Wade Adcock and Mac Adamson also singled. Miller, Lamoureux and Chase Stoline each recorded an RBI.
CMB 11, GC 2
Collins-Maxwell-Baxter stymied Greene County on May 27, handing the Rams an 11-2 drubbing.
The Rams scored their two runs in the first inning on Wade Adcock’s base hit. But they were unable to bring anyone else across the plate with seven more singles. CMB came out strong in the fifth, scoring five runs. They added three in each of the sixth and seventh innings for the victory.
Reid Lamoureux added a double and single; Calvin Skalla and Logan Lansman, two base hits each; Mac Adamson and Tom Gannon, one single apiece.
Branden Miller was the losing pitcher, throwing two innings as he gave up five runs on one hit and five walks. Dylan Fouch took over, allowing six runs on 11 hits. He struck out four and walked two. The Raiders had seven earned runs.
